Monuments Men Part II Questions

Covers on the Silver Screen

Hi guys! Today it’s my turn to host our discussion of Part II of The Monuments Men and I’m excited to get started. Next week be sure to visit Jennifer at Bookalicious Mama for our discussion of part III.

1. “To most soldiers, war was circumstance. But to someone like James Rorimer, it was a mission of a lifetime.” – page 74. What do you think these sentences mean? Do you agree with the author?

2. What do you think of men volunteering for the army to be in the MFAA? Especially men with families?

3. What scene so far are you most excited to see in the movie?

4.  As Taper asks on page 107, is art worth a life? Is it worth smaller things, like making the troops sleep outside to avoid damaging historic buildings?

Any other thoughts on the book so far?

Is it worth smaller things, like making the troops sleep outside to avoid damaging historic buildings? When these young men were in the throws of battle, giving their lives for others freedom, I feel that they should be able to rest their heads in any warm, save place that is available. And as we read in the book, the war planes overhead drop bombs everywhere. To tell soldiers that they can not warm their feet in a nice dry building would make a person resentful of the work of art whereas if they were allowed to stay safe in the building with the artwork maybe they would have more respect for it and keep it safe.
Scene from the movie I am interested in seeing is the artwork that is discussed in the book. Some of the artwork I had never heard of before. So I am interested in viewing these great works of art.

    • I agree! I think if they’d just made sure the troops knew not to damage things, they probably could have let them sleep inside. I’m sure the artwork in the movie is going to be fantastic. I’m also really looking forward to the scene where one of the monuments men was accused of being a spy. If they include that in the movie, I think it could be a really funny scene :)
