How to Write Short

January 28, 2014 non-fiction 30

how to write shortTitle: How to Write Short
Author: Roy Peter Clark
Source: library
Fun Fact: The term blurb comes from the fictitious character Miss Belinda Blurb whose over-the-top praise was used to sell books.
Rating: ★★★★★
Review Summary: This guide included a ton of great techniques and ideas for practicing them. Definitely something I’d like to own as a reference.

“In How to Write Short, Roy Peter Clark turns his attention to the art of painting a thousand pictures with just a few words. Short forms of writing have always existed-from ship logs and telegrams to prayers and haikus. But in this ever-changing Internet age, short-form writing has become an essential skill. Clark covers how to write effective and powerful titles, headlines, essays, sales pitches, Tweets, letters, and even self-descriptions for online dating services. With examples from the long tradition of short-form writing in Western culture, How to Write Short guides writers to crafting brilliant prose, even in 140 characters.” (Source) Read more »

Futuristic Friday

January 24, 2014 Blogger Events 6

futuristic-friday
Today is not only a non-fiction Friday, but also the first Futuristic Friday, a quarterly event I’m excited to start hosting with Tamara at Traveling With T!Each time  we’ll be sharing some of the books we’re most looking forward to in the next three months. We both like some of the same books (mostly stuff considered women’s fiction), but have our own unique tastes too, so I’m excited to see what she recommends. This quarter’s post is over at her blog, so you should check out our recommendations there. Happy Friday everyone!

Sex and the Founding Fathers

January 21, 2014 Biography, History, non-fiction 20

sex and the founding fathersTitle: Sex and the Founding Fathers
Author: Thomas Foster
Source: from publisher for review
Rating: ★★☆☆☆
Review Summary: This book included a lot of interesting stories written in a not very interesting, not very organized way.

Sex and the Founding Fathers does not directly deal with sex and the founding fathers, as you might expect. Instead the author examines how people have remembered the founding fathers and their sex lives throughout history. He argues that how we view the founding fathers says something about our values. We like to imagine that the founding fathers were paragons of virtue. How we remember them shows what we think an ideal American should be like. Read more »

Non-fiction Friday

December 13, 2013 Blogger Events, non-fiction 12

books

Hello all and welcome to the first Non-Fiction Friday! During the discussion about memes it sounded as though other people also enjoy genre specific link-ups and I’ve been thinking for a while that non-fiction needs one of these. Although I’ve connected with some great non-fiction bloggers, I do think those of us who blog about non-fiction are in the minority. A link-up like this seems like a great way for us to find each other. I’ve also been inspired by Anya at On Starship and Dragon Wings similar feature for Fantasy and Sci-fi books which is getting lots of great links every week. Read more »
