#NFBookClub Discussion Part 2

December 20, 2015 Uncategorized 8

BookClubLogoSpecificBook

I was surprised to find this book both emotional and informative. I hope you all got as much out of it as I did! I also finished this book hoping that medical professionals are reading it. It’s definitely a book I think I should pick up again as I confront some of the difficult life events the author discusses. The second half of the book didn’t raise too many more questions for me, but here are the ones I’ve thought of.

So far, this book has included more stories and less science than I expected, but I’ve still been enjoying it and feel as though I’m learning a lot. I hope you’re all having a good time with it too! I know it’s the busy holiday season right now, so I appreciate you all taking the time to join in. If you want to hop in the google doc discussion anytime this month, you can find it here.  Our discussion questions for the first half of the book are below. Read more »

#NFBookClub Being Mortal Read-Along Begins!

December 1, 2015 Uncategorized 10

BookClubLogoSpecificBook

Especially after having such a great time with Nonfiction November this month, I’m excited to kick off another fun read-along! The google doc is now available for discussion, which I’m hoping to start contributing to myself tomorrow after picking up Being Mortal at the library.  Although I’m beginning to find the number of books I’ve read that are related to death purely by chance slightly concerning (Stiff, Smoke Gets in Your Eyes, Dead Center), I am excited to get to Being Mortal after hearing good things about from so many other bloggers. Hopefully it will live up to the hype for all of us this month 🙂

As a reminder, here’s the planned schedule:

Then on Friday I’ll announce what book we’ll be reading in December. I know it’s the holiday, so as always, this will be a laid back read-along, with a google doc open for discussion all month and discussion question link-ups open for several weeks. I hope you’re able to join in! If so, please vote for what book we’ll be reading in the poll below.

#NFBookClub The Devil in the White City Discussion – Part 1

October 10, 2015 Uncategorized 7

BookClubLogoSpecificBook

I hope you all are enjoying this book as much as I am, because so far, I think it’s fantastic! I’m wishing for in-text citations,  so I didn’t have to turn to the bibliography to find out if something is supported by a citation or not. At the same time, I’m loving the author’s dramatic writing style enough that I can’t mind the extrapolating he does from sources to make that possible. Here are the questions I’ve been thinking about while reading the first part of the book. Edit: I forgot initially to share the Google doc! If you’re interested in more free-form discussion, you can join in here.

Alright, a few days late with this post, but I now have a Google doc set up so we can get some discussion going! I can’t wait to start The Devil in the White City and find out for myself what all the Erik Larson hype is about. I’m also very excited for the possible movie adaptation and want to be ready to watch. Here’s a link to the Google doc. I’ve also got a reminder of the schedule and the sign-up linky below. And the #NFBookClub October Read Is…

In another close vote, Devil In the White City and I Am Malala tied for the highest number of votes and I must admit, I broke the tie in favor of the book I already own! But don’t worry – I Am Malala will definitely show up on our next poll. That will almost certainly be in December, since next month we’ll probably have a read-along for Nonfiction November instead. If you want to know more about The Devil in the White City before picking it up, there was an interesting article about it posted today. The schedule for this month’s read-along and sign-up linky are below. As usual, there will be a Google doc posted for discussion at the beginning of the month and you can share your progress as you go using the hashtag #NFBookClub. I can’t wait to get started!
