Nonfiction Friday is a link-up where you can find all of the awesome nonfiction happenings of the week.
- There’s been a lot of great coverage of the National Book Aware winners, including this guide to all the short-listed books and this collection of reviews for all the 21st century nonfiction winners.
- The shortlist for the 2020 Hilary Weston Writers’ Trust Prize for Nonfiction, awarded to the best Canadian nonfiction, was announced.
- As was the shortlist for the Carnegie Medal for Excellence in Nonfiction, where I was excited to see that Fathoms (review) has made the cut.
- Another award winning book I really enjoyed was Albert Woodfox’s Solitary (review), so I’m looking forward to his talk at the National Writer’s Series on Dec 3rd.
- Nonfiction new releases I’m looking forward to next week include:
- Long Time Coming: Reckoning with Race in America
- The Age of Wood: Our Most Useful Material and the Construction of Civilization
- Expedition Deep Ocean: The First Descent to the Bottom of All Five Oceans
- Mediocre: The Dangerous Legacy of White Male America
- Sometimes You Have to Lie: The Life and Times of Louise Fitzhugh, Renegade Author of Harriet the Spy

Just my luck! You have highlighted two books I can
include on my reading list….M. Dyson (..his writing stye is sublime) and Ijeoma Oluo (..haven’t read her yet.)
I will look back on more of your blogpost to find more books for 2021.
l’ve decided to read more nonfiction books by minority authors that are not about being a minority.

I’ve not yet read anything by Oluo yet either, but she’s also on my list. I would also really like to read more nonfiction books by minority authors that aren’t about being a minority. I want to get broader perspectives on science and history and medicine, etc! More of that is my wish for publishers in the coming year 🙂

Agreed! I’m fascinated by how little we know about oceans.
