#AMonthofFaves On the Screen or in Your Ear

December 11, 2019 Uncategorized 16

As you may have noticed, I’ve been struggling a little to fit in posts since about the beginning of November. However, I stopped by Tamara of Traveling With T‘s blog today and saw that today’s topic for #AMonthOfFaves is favorite things you’ve been listening to and watching. I have two particular, bookish recommendations I want to make, so I decided to write them up tonight 🙂

What I’ve been watching

I put off watching this adaptation for ages, in large part because I didn’t love the book. However, my husband suggested watching it this past weekend and I’m glad he did! For one thing, this book was made to be a movie – fun, light, and full of action and world building with great visuals. I also loved the way the world was updated to include not only 80’ss culture, but characters from more modern games. It made the world feel like a more believable future from our current time. Equally importantly, the movie turned down the stalker level on Wade’s behavior towards Artemis by at least 80%, which made it much easier to enjoy their story.

What I’ve been listening to

It turns out that I like a nice, meandering podcast with lots of fun digressions – like My Favorite Murder, for example. In Book Fight, I’ve discovered a podcast I find equally fun, but more thoughtful and focused on a less ethically fraught topic. I definitely don’t think everyone who likes MFM will enjoy this. However, I think some MFM fans will find that this has a similar dynamic that appeals to them as much as it appeals to me.

I couldn’t get through Ready Player One as a book, but I really enjoyed the film! And Book Fight sounds great. I actually don’t like My Favourite Murder, precisely because the combination of fun digressions + ethically fraught subject doesn’t work for me, but I do like the dynamic and it sounds like this would be a good choice for me.

I finished the book on audio, but I found it too light and I think that works better for me as a movie.

If you check out Book Fight, I hope you enjoy it too 🙂

I am starting to get into podcasts. My favorite from this past year is Ear Hustle, which is about life in San Quinten prison. It sounds like a strange topic, but the hosts are great and the stories very compelling.

As with reading, I’m willing to listen on pretty much any topic if the story is told well, so I’ll check that out! Thanks for the recommendation 🙂

I really liked Ready Player One (the book), so I was hesitant about the movie, but I think they did it very well. I was pleasantly surprised.

I’m glad you enjoyed the movie even though you were happy with the source material too! I didn’t feel like they changed much; I think it was just more the sort of light story I expect to get from a movie 🙂

Ooh, Book Fight sounds so good! I need to check that one out. I’m always looking for new podcast recs, I seem to burn through my regulars so quickly. Thanks for the tip 🙂

To each their own! It seems like opinion is pretty divided on these, with some people preferring the book, some the movie, and some enjoying both 🙂

Even though I liked the movie better than the book, I can definitely see enjoying both. I think I mostly liked this story better as a movie, but they were very similar.
