Welcome everyone to the first virtual meeting of Doing Dewey’s Nonfiction Book Club! I don’t know about you, but I’ve come to love the social aspects of blogging. I’ve also been on a real nonfiction kick lately, so I’m thrilled to get to discuss some great nonfiction with you. For our inaugural meeting, we’ll be reading Mary Roach’s Packing For Mars. There are a ton of ways to participate so hopefully everyone who wants to can find something that works for them.
Right now, I’m participating in a great read-along of Ghettoside, hosted by Emily of Backlist Books, and I’m loving using a google doc to chat. It gives you a lot more space than twitter, especially since you don’t have to manage hashtags, and I think it also makes it easier to jump in whenever you have time. So, we’re going to give the google doc method a try for this read-along too! That way, you can jump in and discuss specific sections whenever you get to them, even if you start late or fall behind. If you want to join in the discussion, just follow this link 🙂 We will also have discussion questions you can answer on your blog or in the comments twice during the read-along and a twitter chat to wrap everything up at the end. If you do prefer twitter, you can also chat there using the hashtag #NFBookClub.
Here’s the schedule for all of that:
August 1st-14th: Read Ch 1-8
August 10th – Ch 1-8 Discussion Questions and September Book Poll Posted
August 15th-28th – Read Ch 9-16
August 24th – Ch 9-16 Discussion Questions. Twitter Chat Schedule Poll, and September Book Announcement Posted
If you have any suggestions for September’s read, let me know by the 9th, so I can include your ideas in the September books selection poll. And if you plan on discussing the book at all this month, add your blog, twitter, etc to the link-up we can all find each other. Thanks for joining in!
