Honestly, I think the fairy tales just could have been taken out. They mostly weren’t re-tellings, just the traditional versions I’ve heard before, so they weren’t very interesting and didn’t add anything to the story. However, it sounds as though the next book might incorporate the fairy tales more, so perhaps they’ll turn out to be necessary as background. We’ll see

I would definitely not let the fairytale aspect deter you from reading this one. It was far more historical fiction than fairy tale retelling. If you pick it up, I hope you like it

You might actually like this better than you expect then, because it really was more historical fiction and less fairy tale retelling than I expected. It was a lot of fun as historical fiction, with much more accurate representations of historical society (to my knowledge) than a lot of other YA historical fiction I’ve read.

This sounds a bit like Kate Forsyth’s The Wild Girl, the fairytale aspect, though in that book the stories are told so they can be compiled. This book sounds like it’s got an interesting concept but without any sort of tie between the stories and the plot perhaps it needed two separate books?

Wow, I didn’t know that it was also a great historical fiction novel! Sounds interesting even though I feel a bit bombarded with all the fairy tale retellings lately. I may pick this one up, great review!

I came across this book on Goodreads a while ago and it seems great, though I’m a bit tired of all the fairtale retellings lately. Great to hear this one is also great historical fiction and not yet another retelling. I might pick this one up: thanks for sharing!
