Non-Fiction Friday

NonFictionFriday2Non-Fiction Friday is a link-up where you can find all of the awesome non-fiction happenings of the week. Be sure to link-up your non-fiction posts too!

Non-Fiction News and Resources

  • I always like a good list of reasons to read non-fiction (via Sophie at Paper Breathers)
  • Although I’m getting a bit tired of non-fiction news focusing on young readers, I thought this article quantifying core requirements for non-fiction was interesting
  • And this new non-fiction series aimed at teens seemed interesting too
  • I found this infographic describing how to write a non-fiction book was a bit disappointing since it recommends authors publish in the most popular genres. Perhaps good advice for authors, but as a reader, I’d just been wishing for more variety in the non-fiction books I get pitches for.
  • Interesting books coming out this week include:
    • Soft Soil, Black Grapes: The Birth of Italian Winemaking in California
    • The Cosmic Cocktail: Three Parts Dark Matter
    • Stand Up Straight and Sing! (via Monica of A Lovely Bookshelf on the Wall)
    • Eliot Ness: The Rise and Fall of an American Hero
    • The Tale of the Dueling Neurosurgeons: And Other True Stories of Trauma, Madness, Affliction, and Recovery That Reveal the Surprising History of the Human Brain

No non-fiction to link up for me this week, but I have recently read two I still need to review :)

Love this, like always. And it totally inspires me to read more nonfiction so I can add my links weekly. Prob won’t happen on a weekly basis, but I’m doing better on average!

    • That’s wonderful! I’d like to get better at reading more non-fiction again myself. I’ve let myself be lured into reading a lot of fiction because of the ARCs available and because other bloggers are always reviewing fiction that looks so good! I think I’m going to start adding non-fiction to my review calendar, even if there’s no deadline to review it, to make sure I’m fitting more in.

Thanks for sharing my link! And ohhhhh boy, I want to read The Cosmic Cocktail. So bad! Goodreads needs to get back online so I can add it to my list.

    • You’re welcome :) I don’t think Stand Up Straight and Sing! would have jumped out at me if it weren’t for your review, since I hadn’t heard of the author. It seems like a great book though!

I was surprised by how many times I missed goodreads yesterday! It turns out I use it for more of the things I do with my blog than I would have guessed.

The Tale of the Dueling Neurosurgeons seems to be getting a lot of press. Do you know anyone who has reviewed it yet? I think i’m interested.

The Dueling Neurosurgeons book sounds really interesting. It kind of reminds me of Simon LeVay’s When Science Goes Wrong, which means I will probably check it out.

    • Yeah, they both sound very good! Although I remember reading your review of When Science Goes Wrong and being sad that science is so often portrayed badly in popular books. Hopefully that won’t be the case with The Dueling Neurosurgeons :)
