2014 Reading Challenges: Round 1

(from MamPrint)

(from MamPrint)

Well, it’s that time of year again and if my list of challenges I’m considering was a pile of books it would look like that picture on the left. I love challenges! I want to do ALL of the challenges. And if I pick that many, I will be very stressed out later, so this is my preliminary list which I will narrow down before doing a sign-up post later. If, unlike me, you’re having trouble finding enough challenges, be sure to check out Novel Challenges and thank the wonderful admins who have collected so many challenges in one place. And now, round 1 of narrowing down challenge choices!

  • Book to Movie Challenge (hint: I will do this because I’m hosting and yes, this is shameless self-promotion :-P)
  • New Author Challenge
  • Reading Outside the Box Challenge
  • Lucky No. 14 Reading Challenge
  • 2014 Series Challenge
  • Mental Illness Advocacy Reading Challenge
  • Foodies Read 2014
  • 2014 Ebook Reading Challenge
  • The 2014 Sci-Fi Experience
  • Eclectic Reader Challenge 2014
  • 2014 Audiobook Challenge
  • Read 1 Million Pages (perpetual challenge)
  • Seriously Series Reading Challenge
  • any challenges I did last year not on this list

So yes… there will be some narrowing down in the next week or so! Do you enjoy challenges as much I do or do you prefer to avoid them? Are you especially excited about a challenge you’re participating in or hosting next year?

Holy cow. This is the motherload! I was trying to come up with a personal reading challenge for next year — I should have realized that anything I could possibly think of has been done already. Might have to hop onto a few of these with you!

How many do you typically narrow it down to? I can see how this would get very overwhelming if you don’t think it through!

I would definitely look into what exists before deciding not to start a challenge. I’ve done a number of challenges where the host doesn’t do as much making the challenge social as I would like so it’s possible that even if a challenge on the topic you’re interested in exists, you might be able to make it our own :)

I did 11 challenges last year but some of them were very overlapping (two fairy tale retelling challenges, for example) and some of them I was able to double count books for (indie challenge and debut challenge for example). I think I might do a similar number this year and am debating whether I want to try planning out books in advance, something I don’t usually do.

Thanks for the tip! I was actually thinking about planning out my reading next year too, at least the majority of it. I need better book discipline!

A lot of interesting challenges there. The ones that challenge you to read lots of different types of books and genres are tempting, but I never break away from mystery enough. But… they would be perfect for you.

And I overdid challenges this year and got stressed and this year I am really cutting back. Yet I still have probably 8 I will do, including yours.

It’s true! The genre challenge are some of my favorite. I’ve been doing alright this year because I haven’t been planning out what to read at all. That’s nice for not stressing out, but it also means that I sometimes miss out on using the genre challenges to push me as much as they might otherwise, so I think I’d like to do more planning next year :)

I always do the British Books Challenge, but I might pick one or two others for 2014 :)

That surprises me, since it looks like you’re from the UK. In the US, I have to try much more deliberately to read foreign authors than I do authors from the US! I think it’s wonderful that you’re supporting local authors though :)

WOW! Lots of challenges! I did 1 this year- Cruisin for Cozies- which I completed pretty early thanks to some ARC’s. I’m trying to decide if I want to participate in any challenges this year or not. Jury is still out!

Haha, definitely too many challenges. I’ll hopefully narrow it down this week. I’ll be interested to see what you decide to do :)

I though the movie/book challenge you mentioned sounded pretty good! I’ll be making up my mind soon!

Oh wow! And here I am trying to choose from my list of two, haha. :P I’m eyeing the 2014 Series Challenge as well as the 2014 Rewind Challenge – I like short-term, monthly challenges more, but I’d like to give these year-long challenges a try. I’m looking forward to seeing your choices for Round 2!

I thought about both those challenges too. As a blogger, I think it can be really hard to take the time to do re-reads or to finish a series, especially since I personally feel some pressure to constantly be writing new reviews. Those challenges seem like a great way to start fitting re-reads and series back into blogging!

Yeah, I can definitely relate. At least for the Series Challenge, I’d be mostly reading new-to-me books, whereas I wouldn’t for the other; but either way, it’s going to be a delicate balance between new and old books. Meh, I’ll see…

Good Luck! I think I’m taking the year off from challenges, aside from a personal read at least one classic a month to stay on track with the Classics Club.

That sounds like it could be a great idea, especially if challenges can stress you out. The Classics Club seems like a fun one and I always enjoying hearing about the classics you read :)
