Monday Musings

This week the Monday Musings question from Should Be Reading is the following: How do you organize/store your books? Do you go through them often? Or do you pretty much just shelve them and then leave them alone until you need them?

I have a beautiful bookshelf with a bunch of rectangular compartments. I like it a lot, but the dividers and the differently sized divisions make it nearly impossible to alphabetize by author last name (my traditional method of organizing my books). Instead, I’ve started organizing them more aesthetically. Tall books go in the larger divisions. All my books I’ve gotten free for review or won go in one division. I still get excited about these, so it’s fun to have them separated out! I’m also still pretty excited about my few authographed ones, so sometimes I set those, cover out, alone in a division. I don’t actually go through them very often, but obviously I do derive a lot of pleasure from looking at them and enjoying the books I have.

How do you organize your books? Do you get into the books you own very often?

I whole heartedly agree! I have my autographed books going a different direction from all the others and keep them together :-D

I really didn’t keep an eye out for author events until I started blogging, but I get much more excited about them now :)

I also have a ” won” pile – in amongst all the other toppling piles : http://daystarz.wordpress.com/2012/12/03/musing-mondays-dec-3/

I’m glad I’m not the only one! I may also have a large, tottering, TBR pile in my room, but we don’t have to talk about that one :-P

I used to have books piled on the floor and doubled on the bookshelf. Then realized I would never read them all to our church rummage sales so they are being enjoyed and not collecting dust. I used to be a book buyer for the store I worked for and received lots of free books, I was like a kid in a candy store. Now the books I have read are listed by type of book and then by authors, the ones still waiting to be read are organized by when I received them. Like you I don’t get a chance to look through them or reread them but I do get plenty of pleasure from my library. :) I know one day I will re-read them, but I know them all by heart, they are like my friends! Hugs, Patty

I also cleared out a lot of books recently and tried just to save some personal favorites and some reference books. Moving made me realize how much clutter I have and having a more reasonable number of books seemed like a good start :)

That is so easy to do. We have lived here over 20 yrs, the longest I have lived anywhere, so we accumulated alot! The books are the hardest to get rid of.
